Thought is the third step, and character does not exists.
Character was not existent in ancient times. If we attain to thoughtless state then nothing wrong happens by us. They happen because presence of thoughts makes us unconscious.
Thought is the third stage, as per Eastern scripture. First is need or observation, second is Bhaav ie intent and then comes the thought. They give example of bursting of bubble at surface of a lake. It is action, the movement of bubble from bottom to top is thought. The formation of bubble of sufficient size to leave mud at the bottom of lake is Bhaav ie intent. And definitely the bubble is forming due to some chemical action which is releasing gases that is observation or need like hunger etc.
Most of the methods fail because they attack directly on thoughts.
So if we want to experience thoughtless state, which is our natural state, we have to stop observing worldly things or feel need of them. It is called cutting the root of the action. All anxiety, stress etc are due to thoughts because we have deviated that much from natural state.
So Buddha says to his followers to not look more than four step ahead of you. Keep eyes half shut. It is one way of attacking at the root.
Osho says enjoy life to its fullest and due to excess of it you will never look at them again. This is modern way because now it is impossible to not get distracted as every company is forcing us to distract our attention towards their products.
Apart from this awareness meditation practice, even two minutes a day, creates right situation to experience thoughtless state. Attacking root is like removing shrubs to sow the seed. But the seed is meditation or jikr or remembrance.
Character was not existent in ancient times. Even today there is nothing like character among tribal people. If we attain to thoughtless state then nothing wrong happens by us. They happen because presence of thoughts makes us unconscious.
My suggestions:-
Awareness Meditation is the way worked for me to become conscious in every act by practice it over a long period of time. I tried it first during brushing my teeth in the morning after trying 8-10 meditations over period of 15 years! So there is no need to reinvent the circle for you. May be you too find it suitable otherwise with Dynamic meditation and/or Kundalini in the evening it is suitable for most of the people. There are 110 other meditation techniques discovered by Indian Mystic Gorakhnath about 500years before and further modified by Osho for contemporary people that one can experiment and the suitable one could be practiced in routine life.
